I am currently reading the book Brave New World, and i have to admit, it is truly depressing. They're all promiscuous bottle babies who are numb to everyone's emotions including their own. For those of you who have read the book, you'll understand this more. But in looking at the society portrayed, I notice that they have nothing to live for. They all are conditioned as fetus(es... i...?) to want to be around other people. But they all are also conditioned as young children to be promiscuous and enjoy "erotic play."
However, throughout this orgy of a society, they don't have any close relationships. they all have sex with each other regularly, and they socialize with others, but it seems that they all keep what you could call a safe distance from other people emotionally. They don't allow themselves the vulnerability to get too close to anyone. That way, if someone dies or if they argue or whatever, they wont have to feel the pain of that loss, or betrayal. One of the main characters of the book (who is a "strange man" who questions the society) says at one point "I want to know what passion is, I want to feel something strongly."
I suppose that I just find it so very... devastating that the whole world had lost its emotion. that not one of the people in the world can not be elated with joy, or with love. or to be in agonizing sorrow. or be blazing with fury.
